Mould-made, it features a rounded body with a large central filling hole, surrounded by a convex-curving shoulder decorated with a raised circular border around the discus and radiating relief lines. Often classified as delphiniform because its outline resembles an abstracted dolphin, the lamp is distinguished by a pair of distinctive S-shaped lug handles extending from either side of the body. This characteristic form was popular across the eastern Mediterranean. The underside is finished with a simple raised base ring.

Oil lamps were indispensable objects throughout the ancient Mediterranean, providing illumination in homes, workshops, public buildings, and religious spaces. Typically fuelled by vegetable oil and fitted with a fibrous wick, they offered a practical source of light after sunset. Their widespread use made them an essential part of everyday life, while variations in shape, manufacturing technique, and surface finish reveal the regional ceramic traditions and evolving artistic influences of the ancient world.

During the Ptolemaic period, Egypt occupied a distinctive position at the intersection of Egyptian and Greek cultural traditions. Following Alexander the Great’s conquests and the establishment of Ptolemaic rule, Hellenistic influences became increasingly apparent in Egyptian material culture. Naukratis, an important settlement and trading centre in the Nile Delta, had long connected Egyptian and Greek communities. Its history makes it a particularly compelling setting for understanding the movement of objects, techniques, and ideas throughout the eastern Mediterranean.

With its softly lustrous grey surface, balanced proportions, and crisply moulded details, this ancient oil lamp possesses a restrained elegance that remains appealing today. Once a familiar source of light in the daily lives of people in Ptolemaic Egypt, it now offers a tangible connection to the domestic world and artistic traditions of the Hellenistic age, making it an evocative addition to a collection of ancient Mediterranean pottery or Egyptian antiquities.

Good condition.
