Mould-made, it features a rounded, carinated body with a small central filling hole encircled by a thick, raised ring. Evenly spaced raised ridges radiate from the ring, extending down across the sloping shoulder, while four raised knobs, possibly representing rosettes, provide additional decoration. The body narrows towards a conical nozzle terminating in a circular wick hole, with a horizontal ridge accentuating the area immediately above the opening. The lamp rests on a flat, circular base, providing a stable foundation.

Oil lamps were indispensable objects throughout the ancient Mediterranean, providing illumination in homes, workshops, public buildings, and religious spaces. Typically fuelled by vegetable oil and fitted with a fibrous wick, they offered a practical source of light after sunset. Their widespread use made them an essential part of everyday life, while variations in shape, manufacturing technique, and surface decoration reflect regional ceramic traditions and evolving artistic influences across the ancient world.

During the Ptolemaic period, Egypt occupied a distinctive position at the intersection of Egyptian and Greek cultural traditions. Following Alexander the Great’s conquests and the establishment of Ptolemaic rule, Hellenistic influences became increasingly visible in Egyptian material culture. Naukratis, an important settlement and trading centre in the Nile Delta, had long connected Egyptian and Greek communities. Its history makes it a particularly compelling setting for understanding the exchange of objects, techniques, and ideas throughout the eastern Mediterranean.

With its finely finished surface, balanced proportions, and crisply moulded decoration, this ancient oil lamp possesses a restrained elegance that remains appealing today. Once a familiar source of light in the daily lives of people in Ptolemaic Egypt, it now offers a tangible connection to the domestic world and artistic traditions of the Hellenistic age, making it an evocative addition to a collection of ancient Mediterranean pottery or Egyptian antiquities.

Good condition.
