Abelam Ceremonial Coconut Flute

Abelam people, early to mid. 20th century, Maprik District, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea

Magnificent and finely aged ceremonial flute made from the shell of a small coconut, expertly carved and transformed into a ritual sound instrument. The exterior surface is incised with refined geometric patterns and paired stylized faces, while two drilled apertures allow the production of modulated tones—played either open or with partial obstruction of the holes. The piece remains in working order.

Such coconut-shell flutes formed part of Abelam ritual life, likely connected to male ceremonial practices and the community’s deep agricultural traditions. The Abelam are renowned for their yam-based ritual cycle, in which the cultivation of large ceremonial yams is intertwined with notions of prestige, restraint, and spiritual potency. Musical instruments such as this example were used during ritual gatherings and fertility ceremonies associated with the yam harvest, and were typically handled only by initiated men or dignitaries.

Good condition. Surface wear consistent with age and use. Dark brown patina. Size approx. 6,6cm x 5,9cm x 6,0cm.
