Late Byzantine Empire, c. 1100–1600 AD, Greece (Macedonia)

An exquisitely crafted and rare Byzantine Greek or Macedonian cast and hand-hammered bronze men's ring, retaining traces of thin gold and silver plating. The broad, circular bezel and serrated outer profile evoke the form of a military shield or ceremonial crown, creating a bold and highly distinctive appearance. Floral elements adorn the upper, lateral, and lower portions of the ring, adding an elegant decorative character to the otherwise martial design.

At the centre is a striking red domed setting enclosed within a high-walled metal cell and surrounded by a series of sharply defined triangular tabs. The vivid red centre imitates the appearance of the highly prized cabochon garnets and carnelians favoured in earlier periods of Mediterranean and Byzantine luxury jewellery. In later regional revival pieces such as this, similar effects were often achieved using poured vitreous ruby-red glass, allowing craftsmen to reproduce the rich appearance of precious gemstones.

The central setting is framed by raised metallic bands carefully worked to imitate the appearance of fine filigree. Around these is a recessed circular trench decorated with delicate vitreous cloisonné enamel, providing an additional layer of colour and texture. The combination of deep ruby red, copper-derived green and near-black tones, set against a gilded metallic framework, creates the rich polychrome effect characteristic of Byzantine luxury metalwork.

Rings of this imposing form were not merely functional ornaments but could serve as conspicuous expressions of wealth, status, identity, and affiliation. The shield-like profile and crown-inspired silhouette give the piece a particularly commanding presence, while the combination of enamel, simulated gemstones, and precious-metal plating demonstrates the Byzantine fascination with richly coloured and highly worked surfaces.

A rare and visually impressive example of Byzantine-inspired jewellery, this ring combines martial symbolism with the sumptuous decorative language of Byzantine luxury arts. Its layered construction, vibrant colour scheme, and elaborate central setting make it a compelling object for collectors of Byzantine, medieval Greek, and Eastern Mediterranean antiquities.
