The Celts, c. 200 BC – 300 AD, Danube Basin

An exceptional set of three ancient bronze ring-money pieces, each displaying an attractive patina developed over centuries of age and burial. Simple in form yet historically significant, these rings belong to a fascinating category of objects associated with the economic and social life of Iron Age and Romano-Celtic Europe.

The Celts were a network of interconnected tribes that emerged across Central Europe during the Late Bronze and Iron Ages, united by related languages, religious beliefs, and artistic traditions. At their height, Celtic cultures extended from the British Isles and the Atlantic coast of Europe to the Danube Basin, the Black Sea, and even Anatolia. Renowned for their sophisticated craftsmanship, Celtic artisans produced some of the ancient world's most distinctive metalwork, including torcs, fibulae, weapons, ceremonial vessels, and personal ornaments characterized by flowing, abstract designs and dynamic ornamentation.

Before the widespread adoption of struck coinage, bronze ring money circulated throughout many Celtic regions, including Gaul, Britain, Ireland, and the Danube territories. The exact function of these objects remains the subject of scholarly debate. While some examples may have served as fittings for harnesses, belts, or garments, their standardized forms, recurring weights, and frequent discovery in hoards strongly suggest that at least some were used as a medium of exchange or store of value.

These enigmatic rings therefore represent a transitional stage in the development of money, bridging the gap between barter economies and the emergence of formal coinage. Elegant in their simplicity, they offer a tangible connection to the economic networks and cultural traditions of the ancient Celtic world.
