Pre-Columbian Era, Chancay Culture, c. 1000–1470 AD, Peru
An intriguing hand-modeled pottery fragment depicting the head of a monkey, likely once part of a larger votive statuette. Though traces of its original dark brown pigment have faded over time, this piece still retains its expressive craftsmanship and cultural significance.
Monkeys were not native to coastal Peru, but historical accounts suggest they were imported from Ecuador, kept as pets, or even trained to harvest fruit. Their depiction in Chancay art suggests spiritual or symbolic importance, possibly linked to fertility, nature, or the supernatural realm. The Chancay civilization flourished along the central coast of Peru, producing distinctive ceramics found in burial sites. Their pottery, often mold-made from a gritty clay, features a matte surface, typically painted with black or dark brown geometric and figurative designs over a white slip.
This rare fragment offers a fascinating glimpse into Chancay artistry and their connection to the natural world, preserving the essence of an ancient Andean culture.
Moderate condition. Age-related heavy wear, chip and abrasion. Rich earthen deposits. Size approx. 5,6cm x 6,4cm x 6,6cm.
