Pre-Columbian Era, Chimú Culture, c. 800-1470 AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru
A fascinating and rare Chimú blackware effigy bottle depicting an anthropomorphic figure, possibly a shaman or high-status individual, adorned with an elaborate headdress that seamlessly transitions into the vessel’s spout. The highly stylized face features almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, a small closed mouth, a pointed chin, and oversized ears, reflecting the Chimú’s unique sculptural tradition. The placement of the head at the base of the neck is a hallmark of Chimú iconography, emphasizing hierarchical status and spiritual significance.
This striking vessel, supported by a circular pedestal foot, presents a globular, slightly compressed body and is adorned with intricate relief motifs, including birds, dots, and possibly corncobs, symbolic of agriculture, fertility, and divine connection. Though now missing its original strap handle, the bottle retains its powerful ceremonial presence.
Chimú ceramics were expertly crafted using reduction firing techniques, which deprived the kiln of oxygen, resulting in the characteristic deep black finish. The smooth, polished surface was achieved through meticulous stone burnishing, enhancing both aesthetic appeal and symbolic significance. These mold-made vessels served both functional and ritualistic roles, often found in elite burials and ceremonial contexts.
This exceptional artifact is a testament to Chimú artistic mastery and cultural identity, making it a rare and desirable addition to any collection of pre-Columbian antiquities.
Moderate condition. Chipping to the rim and foot. Missing handle. Otherwise, intact with an excellent presentation and nice preservation of relief detail. Lovely polished patina. Size approx. 19,2cm x 9,2cm x 9,2cm.
Provenance: private collection from Canada.
