Chimú Wood Figure of a Kneeling Dignitary or Lord King

Pre-Columbian era, Chimú culture, c. 1100-1470AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru.

Fabulous and impressive Chimú figure are finely carved from a single piece of wood. Representing a high dignitary or Lord-King, and probably used as the handle or finial of a royal staff or scepter. This figure is shown in a kneeling pose atop an integral rectangular plinth, holding both bent arms atop his loincloth-adorned lap, and has hemispheric protrusions centered on the chest and in-between the shoulder blades. The stylized facial expression features broad, almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, a tapered mandible with a pointed chin and oval-shaped mouth, and tab-shaped ears, all beneath a flat-topped conical headdress. The unusually arid climatic conditions of Peru’s coastal desert allows for the preservation of organic materials, notably including the wooden figures that are often absent in other areas.

Excellent condition. Age-related wear and abrasion. Repairs to small areas of one arm and cap, with minor chips and very light adhesive residue along break lines. Beautiful eroded patina. Size approx. 10,4cm x 3,6cm x 2,9cm (excluding custom metal stand).

Provenance: From the estate of Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany. Collected in the 1950's to 1960's.
