Chimú Wood Figure of a Kneeling Dignitary or Lord King
Chimú Wood Figure of a Kneeling Dignitary or Lord King
Pre-Columbian Era, Chimú culture, c. 1100-1470AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru.
This exceptional wooden figure, finely carved from a single block, portrays a high-ranking dignitary or Lord-King, likely serving as the handle or finial for a ceremonial staff or scepter. The figure is depicted in a reverent kneeling pose atop an integral rectangular plinth. Both arms rest bent atop the lap, accentuated by a loincloth and hemispheric adornments centered on the chest and between the shoulder blades.
The facial features are rendered in a stylized yet expressive manner, with broad almond-shaped eyes, a slender nose, and a pointed chin that lends an air of authority and gravitas. The oval mouth and tab-like ears are framed by a flat-topped conical headdress, further emphasizing the figure’s elevated status. The artistry of this piece highlights the sophistication of Chimú craftsmanship, while the arid coastal desert of Peru has preserved its organic medium in remarkable condition. Wooden artifacts such as this are rare, as similar items from other regions often succumb to decay. This piece not only exemplifies the Chimú culture's technical skill but also provides insight into the ceremonial practices and social hierarchy of one of ancient Peru’s most influential civilizations.
A stunning artifact, this dignitary figure is a rare and extraordinary addition to any collection of Pre-Columbian art, embodying the elegance and cultural richness of the Chimú civilization.
