Pre-Columbian Era, Chimú Culture, c. 800-1470 AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru

A fantastic example of a Chimú blackware effigy bottle, this small yet striking vessel showcases the elegant form of a parrot, a bird highly valued in Chimú society. Featuring a tall neck, wide strap handle, and expertly molded details, this piece exemplifies the Chimú mastery of mold-made ceramics.

Parrots were not only kept as pets by the Chimú elite but also played significant roles in religious rituals and adorned the royal garments of the nobility. Their vibrant feathers were highly prized, symbolizing power, status, and spiritual connection. The inclusion of this bird in ceramic form reflects the Chimú people's deep admiration for nature and their refined artistic sensibility.

Like all Chimú blackware, this vessel was produced using reduction firing, a specialized technique that removed oxygen from the kiln, creating the characteristic deep black sheen. The smooth, polished surface was achieved through meticulous stone burnishing, giving the piece its signature luster. Chimú ceramics were predominantly mold-made for both utilitarian and ceremonial purposes, with this effigy bottle likely serving ritualistic or symbolic functions.

This exquisite and highly collectible artifact is a testament to Chimú artistic refinement and cultural heritage, making it an exceptional addition to any collection of pre-Columbian antiquities.

Good condition. Chip to rim. Age-related minimal wear. Lovely polished patina. Size approx. 10,3cm x 8,7cm x 5,8cm.
