Pre-Columbian Era, Chimu culture, c. 800–1470 AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru

A fine and well-preserved blackware stirrup spout vessel, exquisitely mold-formed and embodying the refined ceramic traditions of the Chimú civilization. The highly burnished vessel stands on a flat base and features a squat, globular body surmounted by a projecting cylindrical spout connected by a classic stirrup handle.

The shoulder is elegantly adorned with a molded band of spiraling geometric motifs in low relief, creating rhythmic movement across the dark surface. At the base of the stirrup handle, two stylized bird-like projections—possibly parrots—add both sculptural dynamism and symbolic resonance. Such avian imagery held important cosmological associations in Andean belief systems, often linked to status, communication, and the supernatural realm.

Like most Chimú ceramics, this vessel was produced using advanced mold-making techniques that allowed for consistent yet finely detailed forms. It was fired in a reduction atmosphere, in which oxygen was restricted within the kiln, transforming the clay into its characteristic deep black tone. The lustrous surface was achieved through careful stone burnishing, a labor-intensive process that remains a hallmark of Chimú craftsmanship.

Elegant in silhouette and rich in cultural meaning, this rare stirrup spout vessel stands as a powerful testament to Chimú technical ingenuity and artistic sophistication—an exceptional and museum-worthy example of Andean ceramic mastery.
