Chimú-Inca Miniature Vessel

Pre-Columbian era, Chimú-Inca culture, c. 1430-1470AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru

Absolutely charming small-sized Chimú pottery vessel featuring an ovoid body, short neck, flaring spout, and small strap handles on the shoulders. The rounded base and vertical mold seams along the sides reflect the standardized, mold-made technique typical of Chimú ceramic production. Its surface is well-smoothed and polished, showcasing the culture’s renowned craftsmanship.

Chimú ceramics served both practical and ceremonial purposes—used in households and as ritual offerings. Most pieces were created from a distinctive black ware, achieved by firing the clay in a low-oxygen environment, which transformed iron compounds into a deep black tone. Lighter ceramics were also produced, though in smaller numbers.

The glossy finish of Chimú pottery was obtained by burnishing the surface with a polished stone. A hallmark of their artistry, Chimú vessels often depicted animals, fruits, humans, and supernatural beings—embodying both everyday life and the spiritual beliefs of this coastal civilization. This miniature vessel beautifully captures the essence of Chimú-Inca artistic tradition just before the Inca expansion absorbed the Chimú state.

Good condition. Chips to rim. Wear consistent with age and use. Size approx. 6,0cm x 7,4cm x 3,8cm.
