Pre-Columbian Era, Chimú Culture, c. 800-1470 AD, Moche Valley, Trujillo, Peru

An exquisite and highly elegant hammered silver alloy tupu—a traditional Andean shawl pin used to fasten garments such as the acsu or lliclla. The slender, tapering body terminates in a thin, discoid finial, a refined example of the Chimú metallurgical tradition. While primarily silver, the alloy may contain small traces of copper, a characteristic of Chimú silverwork.

Tupus were essential adornments in Andean society, symbolizing status and femininity. Worn by elite women, these pins secured woven textiles at the shoulders, with their tips pointing upward or diagonally. Silver, revered by ancient Andean civilizations as a sacred metal linked to the moon, was a privilege of the noble class, further elevating the significance of this piece.

A stunning artifact that embodies the artistry, symbolism, and prestige of pre-Columbian South America—perfect for collectors of ancient adornments and those captivated by Chimú craftsmanship.

Excellent condition. Intact. Wear consistent with age and use. Light corrosion. A fine patina envelops in layers deep dark greyish hues. Size approx. 14,7cm x 0,2cm x 1,2cm.

Provenance: From the estate of archaeologist Ferdinand Anton (1929-2003). Operated in South and Central America during the 1960's and 70's with acquisitions during the same time.
