Pre-Columbian Era, Chiriquí Phase, c. 1000-1550 AD, Chiriquí Region, Panama, Mesoamerica

An exquisite and highly rare example of Chiriquí Phase tripod pottery, crafted in the Tarrago Biscuit tradition—a superior ceramic type known for its light buff, homogenous paste, fine-grained sandpaper-like texture, and exceptionally thin walls. Also referred to as San Miguel Biscuit, Armadillo Ware, or simply Biscuit Ware, this style represents the classic period of Chiriquí occupation, also known as Period VI.

This museum-quality vessel stands on three intricately modeled legs, each sculpted to depict mythical creature heads and arms—a powerful fusion of artistry and symbolism. The appliqué decoration adds to its visual and tactile appeal, showcasing the sophisticated craftsmanship of Chiriquí ceramic specialists. Around 800 AD, significant cultural shifts occurred in Greater Chiriquí, with the possible influence of South American traditions—potentially linked to Chibcha-speaking peoples from Colombia. By 1000 AD, new ceramic styles, such as Tarrago Biscuit ware, emerged while retaining strong connections to earlier artistic traditions.

A stunning and highly collectible Pre-Columbian artifact, this exceptional tripod vessel offers a rare glimpse into the artistic and cultural evolution of ancient Chiriquí society.
