Pre-Columbian era, Colima culture, c. 200-300AD, Colima, Western Mexico.
Superb small-sized hand-built redware effigy vessel. The frog or toad sits with retracted rear legs, sinous forelegs stretched out in front of the round body. The protruding face with large button-shaped eyes, a rounded mouth with incised lips, and impressed nostrils. In the Pre-Columbian world frogs were associated with rain, all the sustenance it ensures, and by extension fertility. Their croaking sound was believed to herald rainstorms. In essence, frogs were thought to be powerful rainmakers. Their connotations with fertility stem from the fact that frogs lay thousands of eggs and typically assume a squatting position, as we see here, a pose commonly associated with childbirth. Gorgeous brownish red slip and polished shiny surface. Good condition. Repaired. Age-related wear and minimal abrasion. Dirt, dust and soil. Size approx. 11,5cm x 8,5cm x 4,5cm.
Provenance: Danish private collection
