Pre-Columbian Era, Comala Phase, Tuxcacuesco-Ortices Style, c. 200 BC–300 AD, Colima, Western Mexico

This exceptional terracotta figurine, crafted during the Comala phase, showcases the artistry of the Colima culture in Western Mexico. Representing a stylized bird, the piece is characterized by its tear-shaped body, tucked wings, broad flat tail, and short, thick neck. The bird’s expressive head features a narrow beak and the distinctive oval "coffee bean" eyes typical of the Tuxcacuesco-Ortices substyle. Its squat legs, covered in a vibrant orange-red slip, lend stability and balance to this compact and lively figure.

Colima ceramics from the Comala phase (200 BC–300 AD) are renowned for their wide thematic diversity and exceptional craftsmanship. Unlike the related traditions of Jalisco and Nayarit, Colima figurines are noted for their smooth, burnished surfaces, minimal use of color, and highly compact forms. While human figures dominate Colima art—depicting musicians, dwarfs, and hunchbacks, among other subjects—animal representations, such as this bird, reflect a deep cultural appreciation for the natural world.

Substyles like Tuxcacuesco-Ortices exhibit unique traits while maintaining the cohesive aesthetic of Colima ceramics. The simplicity of this bird figurine, combined with its polished finish and expressive design, embodies the Colima artisans' skill in transforming clay into lively, meaningful forms. This piece stands as a testament to the sophisticated artistic traditions of ancient Mesoamerica and offers insight into the cultural symbolism of the Colima people. A striking artifact, it would enhance any collection of Pre-Columbian art with its charm and historical significance.
