Collection of Roman Terracotta Miniature Vessels

Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD

An exceptional trio of finely preserved Roman terracotta miniature vessels, each carefully wheel-thrown and beautifully proportioned, dating to the height of the Roman Empire. With their rounded, slightly compressed bodies, wide mouths, and delicately formed rims—originally designed to hold lids—these small vessels embody both the elegance and practicality of Roman ceramic artistry. Their gently tapering shoulders rise from subtly protruding flat bases, lending them stability as well as aesthetic refinement.

Miniature vessels like these once held perfumed oils, precious unguents, and medicinal substances, valued in both domestic households and military camps. They also served ritual purposes, frequently deposited as votive offerings in temples or used in religious ceremonies to honor the gods. Their widespread presence throughout the empire illustrates the intersection of daily life, commerce, and spirituality in the ancient Mediterranean.

This rare and complete set, with its warm earthen patina developed over centuries, offers not only a direct connection to Roman daily life but also a testament to the timeless beauty of classical design. A superb addition for collectors of ancient ceramics, Roman artifacts, or fine antiquities.
