Collection of Roman Terracotta Miniature Vessels

Roman Empire, c. 100–300 AD

A beautiful set of three finely preserved Roman terracotta miniature vessels, each expertly wheel-thrown and elegantly proportioned, dating to the height of the Roman Empire. Their forms feature rounded, slightly compressed bodies, wide mouths, and delicately shaped rims—once intended to hold lids. Subtly tapering shoulders rise from flat, projecting bases, lending both balance and refinement to these small but significant objects.

Miniature vessels such as these were more than simple containers. They once held perfumed oils, precious unguents, and medicinal remedies, valued in domestic life as well as in military contexts. They also played an important role in ritual practice, frequently offered in temples as votive gifts or used in ceremonies dedicated to the gods. Their ubiquity across the empire reflects the deep interconnection of commerce, daily life, and spirituality within Roman culture.

With a warm earthen patina acquired over centuries, this rare and complete set offers a tangible connection to the everyday lives and sacred traditions of antiquity. Excellent condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use, otherwise intact. Lime deposits and multiple root marks. Beautiful russet encrustation. Size approx. 2,3cm x 3,5cm x 3,5cm, 2,4cm x 3,9cm x 3,9cm & 2,3cm x 3,7cm x 3,7cm.
