Roman Stone and Glass Tesserae Mosaics

The Roman Empire, c. 200–400 AD

A mesmerizing set of five ancient Roman mosaic tesserae, each expertly cut from hard red stone and translucent glass. These remarkable fragments once formed part of a grand mosaic, a testament to the exquisite craftsmanship and artistry that defined Roman architectural decoration. Mosaics, known as opus tessellatum, adorned both private and public buildings, gracing floors and walls with intricate geometric and figural designs. Competing with frescos for interior decoration, mosaics were meticulously crafted using black, white, and colored tesserae typically measuring 0.5 cm to 1.5 cm, while the finest details were achieved with pieces as small as 0.01 cm. Each tessera was cut from a variety of materials, including marble, pottery, stone, tile, glass, and even shells, then set into fresh mortar with minimal gaps. The surface was then grouted, cleaned, and polished, creating a stunningly smooth and durable artwork that has withstood the test of time.
