Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp
Roman Terracotta Oil Lamp
The Roman Empire, c. 100-300AD.
Charming, mold-made terracotta oil lamp with greenish slip paint featuring a large, rounded body with a rounded, uneven nozzle. A unpierced lug handle is placed at the rear of the lamp. The discus is decorated with seated dog, in deep relief. The flattened shoulders are unadorned. Robust concentric circles frame the discus and small filling hole. The reverse remains unadorned, with the exception of a circular double base ring and unclear maker's mark.
Small-sized earthenware oil lamps, made from double molds, were used in temples, churches, synagogues, and mosques but were also one of the most essential household appliances in antiquity. A wick produced from plant fiber or linen fabric was placed in a reservoir filled with oil, generally castor or sesame oil, and illuminated.
Good condition. Age-related wear and abrasion with light deposit. Minor hole in the discus and chip in the sides, otherwise intact. Gorgeous patina. Size approx. 10,4cm x 7,7cm x 4,3cm.
Provenance: Danish private collection.
