Early Corinthian Period, c. 620–590 BC, Greece

A superb wheel-thrown terracotta aryballos, finely potted in a compact ovoid form with a small ring foot, globular body, slender neck, and collared rim, joined by a single flat, disc-shaped handle extending from the rim to the shoulder. Vessels of this type were prized throughout the Greek world as containers for perfumed oils and ointments, commonly carried by athletes, warriors, and members of the aristocracy.

The body is decorated in dark brown slip with a lively animal frieze executed in the characteristic Early Corinthian black-figure technique. A pair of horned stags is shown in silhouette, their antlers, eyes, and muscular shoulders carefully defined with delicate sgraffito incision through the painted slip. Accompanying them is a mythical panther-bird, depicted with outstretched wings, a powerful feline body, and an elaborate sweeping tail. The composition is animated by dotted rosettes and finely incised star-shaped filler ornaments, distinctive elements of the Orientalizing style that established Corinth as the foremost producer and exporter of fine painted pottery during the 7th century BC.

Additional decorative bands enrich the vessel. A narrow undulating band with dotted ornament encircles the shoulder, while pendant tongues radiate beneath the flat disc rim. Concentric circles decorate the lower body above the foot, complemented by a band of rays that frames the base. Added red pigment highlights the panther-bird's wings and head, as well as the stag's neck, shoulders, belly, and striped flanks, providing a striking chromatic contrast to the dark painted decoration.

The panther-bird is among the most distinctive creatures of the Corinthian Orientalizing repertoire, combining the strength of a great feline with the supernatural qualities of a bird. Such fantastic hybrid creatures, inspired by the artistic traditions of the Near East and Egypt, were widely employed as protective and decorative motifs, reflecting the vibrant exchange of ideas that shaped Greek art during the Archaic period.

Although displaying gentle wear consistent with its great antiquity, this aryballos remains an elegant and highly attractive example of Early Corinthian pottery. Richly decorated and expertly potted, it stands as a fine testament to the technical mastery and artistic innovation of Corinthian ceramic workshops, making it a distinguished addition to any collection of Greek antiquities.

Good condition. Surface wear commensurate with age, with a few chips to the rim and encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 10,4cm x 8,0cm x 8,1cm.

Provenance: Swedish private collection. Acquired abroad and brought to Sweden in the 1960s.
