Hellenistic Period, c. 315–58 BC, Paphos, Cyprus

This Cypriot marble architectural relief fragment, dating to approximately 300 BC and originating from Paphos, Cyprus, is a finely carved piece that likely once adorned a sarcophagus or architectural structure. Made from white marble, the fragment features geometric decoration above a thick border, suggesting its function as a decorative element. The flat surface on the reverse indicates that it was originally affixed to a larger structure or funerary monument.

During the Hellenistic period, Cyprus was a cultural crossroads, influenced by Greek, Egyptian, and Near Eastern artistic traditions. Paphos, a prominent city on the island, was an important religious and political center, particularly renowned for its sanctuary of Aphrodite. The marble relief’s geometric motifs align with the artistic styles seen in Cypriot funerary art of the time, where abstract patterns and architectural elements were commonly employed to embellish tombs and sarcophagi.

Given its likely association with a sarcophagus, this relief fragment would have served both an aesthetic and symbolic purpose, enhancing the monument's visual appeal while reflecting the artistic heritage of Hellenistic Cyprus. Though only a fragment of a once-complete work, it offers a glimpse into the rich artistic and funerary traditions of ancient Cyprus.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features, and light encrustations within recessed areas. Nice earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 9,6cm x 9,8cm x 3,2cm.

Provenance: Belgian private collection. The object was acquired in travels in between 1910-1930.
