Cypro-Classical II Period, c. 400–323 BC, Republic of Cyprus
This exquisite wheel-made pottery wine jug, or oinochoe, crafted from Plain White Ware VI during the Cypro-Classical II period, is a superb example of the understated elegance and functionality that define ancient Cypriot ceramics. The vessel features a beautifully proportioned depressed ovoid body resting on a slightly raised disc base, a sinuous concave neck, and a refined trefoil-shaped lip designed for smooth pouring. A single strap handle gracefully extends from the rim to the vessel's waist, harmonizing the jug's form with its practical use. The piece is made from light buff clay with white grits, offering a tactile charm that reflects its ancient origins.
Cypriot pottery has a storied history beginning in the Neolithic period, evolving through centuries of cultural exchange and innovation. By the Cypro-Classical period, pottery reflected both local creativity and influences from neighboring regions, particularly the Levant. Plain White Ware emerged as a favored technique for fine ceramics, notable for its simplicity and adaptability. This style was especially prevalent in the creation of functional vessels like jugs and bowls, which were integral to daily life and ceremonial practices. Cyprus, strategically situated at the crossroads of the Aegean, Anatolia, the Levant, and Egypt, was a pivotal player in ancient Mediterranean trade networks. During the Cypro-Classical period, it remained under Persian dominion, yet its artistic and cultural identity flourished. The island experienced a brief period of autonomy under Alexander the Great before becoming part of the Ptolemaic Egyptian empire after his death in 323 BC.
This wine jug is more than just an artifact of utility; it represents the harmonious blend of form, function, and cultural significance characteristic of ancient Cypriot craftsmanship. Its timeless design and historical importance make it a captivating addition to any collection of Mediterranean antiquities or archaeological treasures.
