Early Harappan Civilization, Kot Diji Phase, c. 2800–2600 BC, Sindh, Pakistan

A finely hand-built terracotta jar from the Early Harappan period, representing one of the formative phases of the Indus Valley Civilization. Crafted from reddish-brown clay, this small but robust vessel features a low-bellied globular body resting on a flat base, with gently tapering shoulders that rise to a short neck and a wide, slightly flared rim.

The surface retains faint traces of ancient burnishing, evoking the utilitarian elegance of Early Harappan ceramics—objects created for daily use yet embodying the sophisticated aesthetic sensibilities that would culminate in the mature Indus Valley tradition.

Such jars were commonly employed for storing grains, oils, or other domestic provisions, reflecting the agricultural and urban advances of one of the world’s earliest complex societies. Compact yet evocative, this piece offers a tangible connection to the dawn of South Asian civilization and its enduring legacy of craftsmanship.

Good condition. Surface wear commensurate with age, minor chips and scratches to the body, with encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits throughout. Size approx. 8,7cm x 8,5cm x 7,2cm.

Provenance: British private collection.
