Nishapur, c. 800–1100 AD, North-East Iran

A charming set of three carved bone spindle whorls, each delicately shaped in hemispherical and ribbed barrel forms, their surfaces enhanced with fine incised decoration—linear motifs and the classic dot-in-circle design. Soft natural pink hues lend warmth and character to these ancient tools, once mounted on spindles for spinning thread.

Excavated at Nishapur, one of the great cultural and commercial centers of the Silk Road, these whorls are a direct link to the flourishing textile traditions of the early Islamic world. Their artistry lies not only in their geometry but also in their function: helping to produce fine, evenly spun threads essential for weaving high-quality fabrics.

Though small in scale, they embody the perfect union of utility and beauty. Rare survivors from a city renowned for its craft and trade, they offer collectors an evocative glimpse into daily life, artisanal skill, and the enduring legacy of Islamic material culture.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits throughout. Size varies from approx. 0,5cm to 2,1cm. Sell as a set.

Provenance: Belgian private collection.
