Afghani Roman Glass Bottle
Afghani Roman Glass Bottle
c. 4th to 10th century, Balkh, Afghanistan, Central Asia
Fascinating, unusual glass bottle made from refurbised Roman glass and used for storing perfumed oils, tinctures or medicines. Often referred to as Roman glass, these small-sized and highly iridescent bottles are often found in Central Asia, in regions along the historic Silk Road where ancient kingdoms such as Sogdiana and Bactria once succeed. In this period, Romans would bring glassware to Afghanistan to trade. The Roman glass manufacturing methods were highly advanced, and the industry rapidly developed over a couple of generations during the 1st century AD. Glass vessels became commonplace throughout the empire, and the Romans even exported them to Scandinavia and the Far East.
Good condition. Age-related wear and signs of use. The surface of the exterior and interior is calcified and encrusted with minerals over the years. Bottle has a stunning, heavy iridescent colour that varying from silver to olive green to seafoam green. Size approx. 8,5cm x 8,0cm x 8,0cm.
Provenance: private collection from Denmark.
