Nishapur, 900–1100 AD, North-East Iran
A magnificent example of early Islamic glassmaking, this miniature jar from medieval Nishapur embodies both technical mastery and aesthetic refinement. Blown from a deep, dark green glass—so saturated it appears almost black—this elegant vessel features a slightly compressed globular body, a short cylindrical neck, and an outsplayed rim. A pronounced pontil mark on the flat base affirms its handcrafted origin, typical of traditional glassblowing techniques of the period. The jar has been sensitively repaired, preserving its original form and character.
Nishapur, a thriving hub of culture and commerce in north-eastern Iran during the Islamic Golden Age, was renowned for its sophisticated glass and ceramic production. Miniature vessels like this were highly functional, commonly used to hold perfumes, oils, balms, or medicinal elixirs—precious substances in everyday and ritual life. Originally sealed with soft organic stoppers, now lost to time, they were essential components of domestic, commercial, and sometimes scientific settings.
Beyond its utility, this jar is a striking testament to the innovation and global connections of early Islamic material culture. Its restrained form and rich, inky hue capture the refined taste of a society that prized both beauty and craftsmanship. Rare and evocative, it is a compelling addition to any collection of Islamic art, ancient glass, or medieval antiquities.
