Egyptian Alabaster Bowl

This exquisite, hand-carved alabaster bowl from ancient Egypt, dating to the Late Dynastic Period, showcases the elegance and sophistication of Egyptian craftsmanship. Designed to contain precious liquids and oils, this translucent bowl features thick, gently curving sides tapering to a rounded rim, supported by a stable, subtly rounded base. The alabaster’s natural hues, in delicate creams and browns, radiate beautifully when placed near light, revealing the material's ethereal translucency.

With an impeccably smooth finish inside and out, this bowl exemplifies the alabaster artistry valued across all social strata in ancient Egypt. Alabaster, sourced from quarries along the Nile from Giza to Luxor, was essential in temple rituals and burial practices. These offering bowls were placed in tombs as part of essential provisions for the deceased, underscoring the cultural belief in sustenance for the afterlife. Famed Egyptologist Auguste Mariette discovered that even the poorest Egyptians were interred with small alabaster bowls, signifying the material's enduring significance in both life and death.
