Third Intermediate to Late Period, 1070–332 BC, Egypt
A striking and rare pair of ancient Egyptian bronze and stone inlaid eyes, likely from a mummified sacred animal, possibly a bull. Each eye is circular, convex, and button-shaped, crafted from bronze and inlaid with chalky-white shell or alabaster sclerae, centered with deeply inset bitumen pupils for dramatic contrast. The reverse features a lug for attachment.
Such eyes were used in ritual animal mummies, especially bulls associated with the Apis cult, reflecting the Egyptians’ reverence for sacred animals and their symbolic connection to the gods. A remarkable display of ancient craftsmanship, and a powerful piece of ritual iconography from Egypt’s rich funerary tradition.
Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with heavy oxidation with gorgeous green patina. Size approx. 2,8cm x 2,7cm x 2,1cm and 2,9cm x 2,9cm x 2,2cm. Sell as a pair.
Provenance: Belgian private collection.
