Egyptian Multicolored Beaded Necklace

New Kingdom of Egypt to Ptolemaic Period, c. 1550–30 BC, Naukratis, Egypt

A magnificent ancient Egyptian necklace, beautifully restrung from a diverse collection of original beads and amuletic elements fashioned from core glass, faience, pottery, and an exceptional variety of semi-precious stones, including carnelian, agate, alabaster, and quartz. Such beads formed part of elaborate personal adornments worn throughout ancient Egypt, serving not only as ornaments but also as expressions of status, identity, protection, and religious belief.

The necklace is particularly striking for its rich and varied palette of translucent and opaque beads in shades of blue, green, red, black, yellow, and moss green. Each individual bead displays its own distinctive shape, colour, translucency, and surface character, producing a wonderfully varied composition and an evocative mosaic of ancient craftsmanship. The combination of glass, faience, stone, and pottery reflects the extraordinary range of materials employed by Egyptian artisans in the creation of personal jewellery and protective adornment.

Beads and amulets held an important place in ancient Egyptian life. Beyond their decorative function, particular colours, materials, and forms were believed to possess protective and regenerative properties, while semi-precious stones such as carnelian and quartz were valued for both their beauty and symbolic associations. Their presence in necklaces allowed the wearer to carry these qualities close to the body, while similar beadwork was also placed in funerary contexts to accompany the deceased into the afterlife.

Said to originate from Naukratis, one of the most important Egyptian-Greek trading centres of antiquity, this necklace reflects the cultural interaction and thriving craftsmanship of the Nile Delta. With its exceptional variety of materials, vibrant colours, and unmistakable ancient character, it is a visually captivating survival of Egyptian personal adornment and a superb addition to any collection of ancient jewellery, Egyptian antiquities, or historical beadwork.

Good condition, necklace has been restrung. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age, nicks and chip, with fading to some finer features. Wearable. Length c. 67,0cm.
