Amhara Silver Ear Cleaning Pick Pendant Kuk Mawca
Amhara Silver Ear Cleaning Pick Pendant Kuk Mawca
Amhara people, late 19th century, Ethiopia, Horn of Africa
This magnificent and practical small-sized tool is a silver alloy earspoon or pick (Kuk Mawca) from Ethiopia, which would have been worn as a amulet and pendant. Finely crafted with meticulous linear and dotted designs on rectangular flat handle. There is a loop at one end for hanging around the neck and the tiny spoon at the other. Many claim that Ethiopian Christians believe that it is important to keep your ears clean, especially before attending Church, as to better hear the word of God. These spoons were also used to clean tobacco pipes.
Excellent condition. Expected nicks, abrasions, dents, and softening of detail, all commensurate with age and use. Lovely dark patina. Size approx. 7,3cm x 1,5cm x 0,3cm.
Provenance: private collection from Finland.
