Amhara people, late 19th century, Ethiopia, Horn of Africa
Exquisite and multifunctional silver alloy earspoon (Kuk Mawca), crafted with refined linear and dotted ornamentation along its rectangular handle. Designed to be worn as an amulet-pendant, it features a suspension loop on one end and a finely shaped miniature spoon on the other. Such tools were traditionally used for personal grooming, believed by many Ethiopian Christians to ensure clean ears before entering church—symbolically enhancing one’s ability to “hear the word of God.” They were also practical accessories for cleaning tobacco pipes. A superb example of Ethiopian metalwork, merging elegant design with everyday utility.
Excellent condition. Expected abrasion, dents, and softening of detail, all commensurate with age and use. Lovely dark patina. Size approx. 7,3cm x 1,5cm x 0,3cm.
Provenance: Finnish private collection
