Archaic and Classical periods, c. 675–323 BC, Greece

A beautiful and well-preserved group of three ancient Greek bronze arrowheads. Each example features a lanceolate bilobate blade with a socketed base, the blade defined by a prominent flanged midrib that extends seamlessly into the socket, providing both structural strength and penetrating efficiency.

Bilobate arrowheads are thought to have originated in the Pontic Steppe region during the 8th century BC, predating the later and more familiar trilobate forms. By the 7th century BC, bilobate types had achieved wide distribution across Anatolia and the Caucasus, and subsequently spread throughout the Near East and into Europe. Although trilobate arrowheads became increasingly dominant in later periods, bilobate forms continued to be produced and used alongside them.

Variations within the type include both spur and non-spur forms. Spur-equipped examples are particularly associated with Graeco-Scythian traditions, reflecting the close cultural and military interactions between Greek and nomadic steppe populations. The influence of Scythian archery is well documented in the Greek world; the distinctive Scythian archer’s equipment—including pointed caps, bow cases, patterned garments, and characteristic arrow types—was introduced to Athens in the second half of the 6th century BC, where Scythian archers were famously employed as public police.

This group of bilobate arrowheads offers a tangible link to the transmission of military technology across cultures and stands as a fine example of ancient Greek martial craftsmanship during the Archaic and Classical periods.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Dark green patina and minor encrustations over the whole of each arrowhead. Size approx. 4,4cm x 1,2cm x 0,7cm. Sell as a set.

Provenance: Swedish private collection.
