Archaic and Classical periods, c. 475–300 BC, Greece
A fine and well-preserved group of three ancient Greek bronze arrowheads. Each example is formed with a trilobate blade and a socketed base, the blade articulated by a pronounced flanged midrib that continues smoothly into the socket. This construction enhanced both structural rigidity and penetrating capability, making the form particularly effective in combat.
Often referred to as trilobate or “Scythian-type” arrowheads, socketed trilobate forms are widely attested in the Near East from the 7th century BC and subsequently appear in Greece and Egypt. The type was employed extensively by the Achaemenid Persians prior to 500 BC and later became the dominant arrowhead form in Greece during the 5th century BC.
Although long associated with Scythian and Cimmerian nomadic groups from the Eurasian steppe—who entered the Near East in the 8th century BC—this arrowhead type is now understood to have enjoyed a far broader geographic and chronological distribution. Its widespread adoption reflects its exceptional effectiveness, particularly its ability to pierce armor. The discovery of more than 3,000 trilobate arrowheads at Persepolis, which succeeded Pasargadae as the Achaemenid capital, strongly suggests that this design represented the standard Persian military issue.
This cohesive group of trilobate arrowheads provides a compelling illustration of the diffusion of military technology across cultures and stands as an excellent example of Greek bronze weaponry from the Archaic and Classical periods.
Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions commensurate with age and use. Dark green patina and minor encrustations over the whole of each arrowhead. Size varies from approx. 2,2cm to 3,6cm.
Provenance: Swedish private collection.
