Han Dynasty Lead Green Glazed Pottery Jar

Eastern Han Dynasty, c. 206 BC – 220 AD, China

A magnificent lead green–glazed pottery jar from the Eastern Han Dynasty, elegantly formed with a rounded globular body, gently sloping shoulders, a short neck, and a neatly everted rim. The surface is covered overall with a lustrous, iridescent moss-green glaze, accentuated by a series of finely incised concentric rings encircling the body.

This type of funerary vessel evolved from the lead-glazed pottery of the Warring States period, its form inspired by contemporary bronze ritual wares. The glaze derives its rich colour from copper oxide, fired at low temperatures to produce the distinctive metallic sheen that characterizes Han lead-glazed ceramics.

The present example displays a particularly fine balance of green glaze and natural silvering, with visible stacking and kiln support marks at the base and mouth—testament to its ancient firing process. A superb example of Han ceramic artistry, embodying both technical innovation and refined aesthetic sensibility.

Good condition. Intact, with a slight inclination caused by remnants of the original firing supports — an appealing feature attesting to its authenticity. Surface wear and minor abrasions consistent with age, exhibiting exceptional golden and silvery hues. Areas of encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits remain visible across the surface.
