Hellenistic Pottery Oil Lamp
Hellenistic Pottery Oil Lamp
Hellenistic Period, c. 200-100 BC, Greece.
Absolutely gorgeous, small-sized mold-made oil lamp, featuring a carinated body with an elongated nozzle. The lamp sits on a flat, raised base and it features radiating lines and floral designs in relief originating from the ridge of the filling hole, and two incised lines decorate the nozzle. The lamp also features a small lug handle.
The Hellenistic period covers the time in Mediterranean history after Classical Greece, between the death of Alexander the Great in 323 BC and the conquest of Egypt by Rome in 30 BC. Hellenistic lamps were produced during the Hellenistic Period between the third and first centuries BC. These mold-made lamps were produced primarily in Asia Minor and Egypt. A typical Hellenistic lamp had a round, enclosed body and an elongated nozzle.
Good condition. Age-related wear and abrasion. Minor chip in the nozzle. Smoothed surface with light deposits. Nozzle had even traces of soot. Gorgeous patina. Size approx. 8,1cm x 5,6cm x 3,1cm.
Provenance: Danish private collection.
