Hellenistic Terracotta Head of a Veiled Woman

Hellenistic Period, c. 300–100 BC, possibly Boeotia, Greece

This exceptionally delicate Hellenistic terracotta fragment presents the head of a woman, beautifully modelled with the naturalism, grace, and quiet refinement characteristic of Greek art of the period. Her serene, contemplative expression and outward-directed gaze give the face an unusual sense of individuality, while the softly rounded features convey the idealised yet increasingly naturalistic approach of Hellenistic sculptors.

Her face is framed by softly modelled wavy hair, parted at the centre and drawn back into a small bun behind the head. Covering the upper portions of the ears, the elaborate coiffure is secured by a striking tiered diadem. Its lower band is slender and ornamented at the centre with a circular element, while the upper section expands dramatically outward into a graceful arched silhouette, giving the figure an unmistakable air of elegance and distinction. A narrow band is also tightly wrapped diagonally across the face, extending from the right side downward towards the left and covering the mouth and both ears, adding an intriguing and unusual element to the otherwise serene portrait.

Originally, the head would have formed part of a larger terracotta figure or sculptural group. The identity of the woman remains uncertain, and she may have represented a goddess, priestess, or female personification. Terracotta figurines and statuettes were among the most widespread forms of sculpture in the Greek world, produced in considerable numbers and used across a remarkably broad spectrum of ancient life. They could serve as objects of domestic devotion, offerings in sanctuaries, funerary dedications, or personal devotional and decorative pieces.

Their accessibility and variety make terracotta figures an especially valuable source for understanding the religious beliefs, personal customs, and visual culture of the ancient Greek world. At the same time, finely modelled examples such as this preserve the sophisticated artistic ideals of the Hellenistic age, when sculptors increasingly explored individual expression, elaborate hairstyles, costume, and subtle variations in character.

Good condition. Surface wear and abrasions consistent with age. The figure has been chipped to the diadem. Attractive encrusted patina and rich earthen deposits across the surface. Size approx. 5,7cm x 4,2cm x 4,3cm.

Provenance: From the collection of Harald Egon Stridh (b. 1935), Stockholm. Acquired through auction purchases in Sweden during the 1960s and 1970s.
