Indian Bronze and Copper Ganga Jumna Holy Water Vessel Panchpatra
Indian Bronze and Copper Ganga Jumna Holy Water Vessel Panchpatra
Early to mid. 19th century, Tanjore-Madurai region, Tamil Nadu, Southern India
Beautiful, aged sacred water vessel, panchpatra, made of finely cast bronze inlaid with copper were used at homes and temples during pujas, yagnas, and social and religious rituals, and handled through a special spoon (uddharini). The use of contrasting metals in the panchpatra, is a sophisticated technique known as a Ganga-Jumna, because the two colours are meant to represent the confluence of the Ganges and Jumna, India’s two most sacred rivers. This cylindrical shaped, flat bottomed, and heavily built panchpatra, engraved with fine inscriptions, likely carried holy water from one of those rivers.
Excellent condition. Age-related wear and light abrasion. Superb dark brown patina. Interior with encrusted, build-up residue, consistent with age and sustained usage. Size approx. 7,8cm x 8,7cm x 8,6cm.
Provenance: Finnish private collection
