Early to mid. 19th century, Tanjore-Madurai region, Tamil Nadu, Southern India
Magnificent, important and rare holy water vessel, Vazhipadu panai, constructed from finely cast thick copper alloy. This wonderful, aged lota vessel is of compressed globular form and rests upon a flared pedestal foot and has gently curved sides, with wide corseted neck which widens to a mouth with a broad rim decorated with repeated floral openwork design. The surface is embellished with complex rows of punch-marked dots and circles, with fascinating hammered inscription, possibly in a Tamil script. Such vessels were used at temples during pujas, yagnas, and social and religious rituals to store water, probably purificatory holy water, perhaps from the Ganges.
Excellent condition. Age-related wear and light abrasion. No repairs. Superb patina. Interior with encrusted, build-up residue, consistent with age and sustained usage. Size approx. 20,3cm x 14,8cm x 14,8cm.

Returns
Returns and exchange will be accepted within fourteen days (14) of receipt at the purchaser’s cost to include freight and packaging. Items must be returned in the same condition as when they were shipped, and will not be accepted if damaged or altered in any way.
