Early to mid. 19th century, Kerala, India.

Superb, finely cast old bronze hanging oil (or ghee) lamp from Kerala, a state on the southwestern Malabar Coast of India. Thookku vilakku is a traditional Indian oil lamp used in religious ceremonies and festivals. The Malayalam name "thookku vilakku" are literally translated "pendant light" when the "vilakku" means a lamp. Thookku Vilakku is suspended by chains from the roofs and ceilings of temples, verandas and home prayer rooms, and used during the Diwali, the festival of light, which celebrates the victory of light over darkness, or good over evil. Light is the symbol of knowledge and energy. Hindus believe the ghee or oil represents negative desires (vasanas), and the wick represents ego. When we are lit by self-knowledge, the negative tendencies melt away and finally the ego slowly perish, allowing a person to reach a higher spiritual plane.

Magnificent, heavy-built bronze oil lamp are in excellent condition. Seven individual flames/wicks, long chain and beautiful original hook for hanging. Age-related wear and signs of heavy use. Lovely brownish green encrusted patina. Size approx. 16,0cm x 12,5cm x 12,5cm. Chain c. 49,0cm.
