Indian Kashmir Copper Repoussé Betel Serving Bowl
Indian Kashmir Copper Repoussé Betel Serving Bowl
Late 19th or early 20th century, Kashmir, India
A large, shallow and boldly decorated copper betel serving bowl of circular shape, from Kashmir, India. Set upon a three short pedestal feet, the bowl features plain base, high walls and a slightly everted rim. The body of the bowl is ornamented in wonderful raised repoussé work, with a continuous pattern of floral and foliate scrolls. The copper displays a superb patina, with the raised repousse areas slightly polished, while the recessed areas retain their darker tarnish for an alluring effect that plays beautifully in the light. Interior with heavily encrusted, build-up lime and areca nut residue, consistent with age and sustained usage.
Good condition. Age-related heavy wear, dents and abrasion. The bowl slightly lopsided. Size approx. 24,2cm x 24,6cm x 6,5cm.
Provenance: Finnish private collection
