An impressive and finely cast hanging bronze oil lamp from the Majapahit Empire, skillfully designed with an elegant ovoid pan pinched at each end and divided at the center by a raised barrier to form two separate oil chambers for wicks. Above rises a delicately pierced three-lobed arch, intricately decorated with undulating foliate scrolls — a testament to the refined artistry and metallurgical mastery of Javanese craftsmen.

Such lamps were suspended in temples and noble households, their soft light illuminating shrines and altars dedicated to Hindu and Buddhist deities. The Majapahit Empire, centered on Java, was one of Southeast Asia’s greatest thalassocratic civilizations, renowned for its cultural sophistication, trade networks, and synthesis of Hindu-Buddhist iconography. This lamp exemplifies the empire’s aesthetic ideals — balance, symmetry, and spiritual symbolism rendered in enduring bronze.

Good condition. Age-related heavy wear with some missing decorative elements. Surface wear consistent with age and use. Areas of corrosion and green oxidation throughout. Size approx. 11,5cm x 16,5cm x 11,5cm.

    Returns and exchange will be accepted within fourteen days (14) of receipt at the purchaser’s cost to include freight and packaging. Items must be returned in the same condition as when they were shipped, and will not be accepted if damaged or altered in any way.
