Khmer Angkor Period Stoneware Brown Glazed Vase
Khmer Angkor Period Stoneware Brown Glazed Vase
The Khmer Empire, Angkor period, early 11th century, Cambodia.
This exquisite stoneware vase, dating to the early 11th century during the Khmer Empire's Angkor period, is a testament to the refined artistry of ancient Cambodian ceramics. Crafted in a graceful baluster form, the vase features a tapering body, flattened shoulder, thick neck, and an everted mouth with a pronounced flanged rim. Its surface is adorned with combed wave and star-shaped patterns around the shoulder, complemented by encircling lines on the lower body and foot, adding intricate detail to its design. The deep, dark brown glaze, almost black in its intensity, lends the piece an air of understated elegance and timeless appeal. Such stoneware vessels were not only functional but also reflective of the Khmer Empire's sophisticated aesthetic sensibilities.
The Khmer Empire, spanning from the 9th to the 15th century, was a dominant force in Southeast Asia, known for its monumental architecture, artistic achievements, and cultural influence. At its height, the empire's expanse surpassed that of the Byzantine Empire. Its enduring legacy is exemplified by the grand temples of Angkor, including Angkor Wat and Bayon, which stand as remarkable symbols of spiritual devotion and imperial power. This vase encapsulates the craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the Khmer Empire, serving as a timeless artifact from one of history's most remarkable civilizations.
