Khmer Angkor Period Bronze Lime Container
Khmer Angkor Period Bronze Lime Container
The Khmer Empire, Angkor period, 12th or 13th century, Cambodia.
This elegant bronze vessel, crafted during the 12th or 13th century in the Angkor period of the Khmer Empire, exemplifies the artistry and functionality of Khmer design. The container, composed of two cast sections, features a fluted body and a lid tapering gracefully to a stepped conical finial. Its purpose was to hold slaked lime, a vital ingredient in the preparation of betel nut, a traditional mixture chewed with spices for its mildly intoxicating effects. The lime, derived from shell, coral, or limestone, was essential to this practice, neutralizing the bitterness of the betel nut and facilitating its absorption. Containers like this were not only utilitarian but also served as symbols of refinement, crafted with an aesthetic sensibility that reflected the cultural richness of the Khmer Empire.
At its zenith, the Khmer Empire was one of Southeast Asia's most powerful civilizations, extending across present-day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. The empire’s capital at Angkor is celebrated for its extraordinary architectural achievements, including the iconic Angkor Wat and Bayon temples, which remain enduring monuments to Khmer innovation, spirituality, and wealth.
This lime container embodies the legacy of the Khmer Empire, offering a glimpse into the daily rituals and artistic sophistication of a society renowned for its grandeur and influence. Its intricate form and historical significance make it a captivating artifact of a bygone era. Excellent condition. Age-related wear and signs of erosion. Still contains remnants of its original contents. Earthen deposits. Lovely patina with some evidence of green oxidization. Size approx. 8,7cm x 2,3cm x 2,3cm.
