The Khmer Empire, Angkor period, 12th or 13th century, Cambodia.

This elegant bronze lime container, crafted during the 12th or 13th century in the Angkor period of the Khmer Empire, exemplifies the refined artistry and functional sophistication of Khmer metalwork. Cast in two sections, the vessel features a fluted body surmounted by a lid that tapers gracefully to a stepped conical finial, creating a harmonious and balanced silhouette.

The container was intended to hold slaked lime, an essential component in the preparation of betel nut, a traditional chew mixed with spices and widely used throughout Southeast Asia for its mildly intoxicating and social effects. Produced from shell, coral, or limestone, the lime neutralized the bitterness of the betel nut and aided its absorption. Such containers were practical objects of daily life but were also markers of status and refinement, reflecting the importance of betel chewing in courtly and social rituals.

At its height, the Khmer Empire was among the most powerful civilizations in Southeast Asia, extending across much of present-day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, and Vietnam. Its capital at Angkor is renowned for monumental architectural achievements such as Angkor Wat and the Bayon, enduring testaments to Khmer ingenuity, spirituality, and wealth.

This bronze lime container embodies the cultural richness of the Angkor period, offering insight into everyday ritual practices and the aesthetic values of a society celebrated for its grandeur and lasting influence.

Good condition. Repaired lid. Age-related wear and signs of erosion. Still contains remnants of its original contents. Lovely patina with green oxidization. Size approx. 12,2cm x 5,0cm x 5,0cm.
