Khmer Angkor Period Pottery Bowl
Khmer Angkor Period Pottery Bowl
The Khmer Empire, Angkor Vat or Bayon period, c. 1100-1300AD, Cambodia.
This exquisite shallow pottery bowl, dating to the Angkor Vat or Bayon period of the Khmer Empire (c. 1100–1300 AD), reflects the refined craftsmanship and aesthetic sensibilities of the era. The vessel features an everted, slightly uneven rim and rests on an unglazed ring foot. Its upper portion is adorned with a lustrous chocolate-brown glaze, contrasting with a bisqued cream-colored band at the center, adding an understated elegance to its design. Khmer ceramics, renowned for their quality and versatility, were produced in significant quantities during the 11th and 12th centuries. These wares were not merely utilitarian but also integral to the cultural and artistic identity of the Khmer people, serving both practical and ceremonial purposes.
The Khmer Empire, a dominant power in Southeast Asia from the 9th to the 15th century, was distinguished by its monumental architectural achievements and sophisticated material culture. At its height, the empire's expanse and influence rivaled that of contemporary civilizations, such as the Byzantine Empire. The grandeur of Angkor, the Khmer capital, is immortalized in its iconic temples, including Angkor Wat and Bayon, which stand as enduring testaments to the empire's immense power, wealth, and spiritual devotion. This bowl serves as a tangible link to the Khmer Empire's golden age, encapsulating the elegance and ingenuity of its ceramic traditions and the rich cultural heritage of one of history's most remarkable civilizations.
