Khmer Angkor Period Pottery Honey Jarlet
Khmer Angkor Period Pottery Honey Jarlet
The Khmer Empire, Angkor Vat or Bayon period, c. 1100-1300AD, Cambodia.
Lovely, finely potted small-sized honey jar with piriform body, cylindrical neck and flaring mouth. The jarlet rests on a shallow ring foot. Adorned with dark brown glaze. Of very good quality, Khmer ceramics were produced in high volumes during the 11th and 12th centuries. The Khmer Empire, or the Angkorian Empire, are the terms that historians use to refer to Cambodia from the 9th century to the 15th century when the nation was a Hindu/ Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia. As its peak, the Khmer Empire was larger than the Byzantine Empire which existed around the same time. Perhaps its most notable legacy is the site of Angor, in present-day Cambodia, the Khmer capital during the empire's zenith. The majestetic monuments of Angkor, such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, bear testimony to the Khmer Empire's immense power and wealth.
Good condition. Age-related wear. Chip in the rim and foot. Repaired. Glazing defects and firing flaws. Rich patina. Size approx. 8,7cm x 6,4cm x 6,4cm.
Provenance: Danish private collection
