The Khmer Empire, Angkor Vat or Bayon period, c. 1100-1300AD, Cambodia.

Delicate, finely potted small-sized honey jar with slightly compressed globular body, short neck and flaring petite mouth. The jarlet rests on a shallow ring foot. A deep dark brown glaze covers the vessel. Of very good quality, Khmer ceramics were produced in high volumes during the 11th and 12th centuries. Khmer Angkor or Bayon period jarlet. The Khmer Empire, or the Angkorian Empire, are the terms that historians use to refer to Cambodia from the 9th century to the 15th century when the nation was a Hindu/ Buddhist empire in Southeast Asia. As its peak, the Khmer Empire was larger than the Byzantine Empire which existed around the same time. Perhaps its most notable legacy is the site of Angor, in present-day Cambodia, the Khmer capital during the empire's zenith. The majestetic monuments of Angkor, such as Angkor Wat and Bayon, bear testimony to the Khmer Empire's immense power and wealth.

Excellent condition. Age-related wear. Glazing defects and firing flaws. Lovely patina. Size approx. 9,1cm x 8,1cm x 8,1cm.
