The Khmer Empire, Angkor Vat or Bayon period, c. 1100-1300AD, Cambodia.

This finely crafted honey jarlet, dating to the Angkor Vat or Bayon period of the Khmer Empire (c. 1100–1300 AD), showcases the elegant pottery traditions of ancient Cambodia. Its compressed, globular body is paired with a short neck and a slightly flaring petite mouth, achieving both aesthetic balance and functional design. A rich, deep dark brown glaze adorns the upper portion of the vessel, enhancing its understated sophistication.

Khmer ceramics of this era, renowned for their exceptional quality and durability, were produced in large quantities, reflecting the skill and ingenuity of Khmer potters. Such vessels were likely used for everyday storage or ceremonial purposes, playing a vital role in the daily and spiritual lives of the Khmer people.

The Khmer Empire, spanning from the 9th to the 15th century, was a dominant Hindu-Buddhist civilization in Southeast Asia, celebrated for its monumental architecture, extensive trade networks, and cultural achievements. At its peak, the empire's influence rivaled that of its contemporary civilizations, such as the Byzantine Empire. The awe-inspiring temples of Angkor, including Angkor Wat and Bayon, remain as enduring symbols of the empire's grandeur and spiritual devotion.

This honey jarlet embodies the artistry and cultural legacy of the Khmer Empire, serving as a tangible reminder of one of history's most remarkable civilizations and its timeless contributions to art and craftsmanship.
