Lega Bwami Lukwakongo Mask

Absolutely gorgeous, small-sized Lega mask, known as lukwakongo, is crudely carved out of wood with engraved eyes and open mouth. Long nose is narrow. The face is whitened with kaolin clay, while the edges characteristically have a dark brown glossy patina. To the side of the mask are a series of holes for the attachment of a raffia beard. The life of the Lega is regulated through the Bwami Society, to which both men and women belong. There are seven levels for men and four levels for women. All Lega masks are therefore Bwami Society masks. Lukwakongo means "death gathers in", and these fairly small masks are never worn on the face, but are instead tied to the arm or hung on a fence at Bwami meetings. Larger "ancestor" masks (idimu), are worn on the face or back of the head, and can only be worn by men belonging to the two highest ranks of the Bwami Society (Yananio and Kindi). Every time a mask is used it is rubbed with white clay (pembe), over time acquiring a white patina.

Good condition. Age-related heavy wear and signs of use. Small hole. Chip and fractures. Traces of white clay and brown pigment. Size approx. 25,5cm x 12,5cm x 4,3cm.
