Madang Province, early to mid-20th century, Sepik–Ramu estuary, Papua New Guinea

Exceptional, small-sized and beautifully aged miniature mask, finely carved from brown wood. The sculptural design features an elongated forehead and a powerful brow overhanging the diamond-shaped, upward-slanting eyes, each pierced with small round openings. A long, curved bird-beak nose with a pierced septum dominates the profile, while the lower portion of the ovoid face displays a serrated beard line and a tiny crescent-shaped mouth. Small knobs accent both the top of the head and the chin, adding to its dynamic presence.

In the Sepik–Ramu region, masks embody powerful ancestor spirits associated with success in hunting, gardening, fishing, and formerly warfare. While full-sized dance masks were worn or mounted on large basketry structures, miniature examples such as this one served as personal talismans. Carried by men in their woven bilum bags during hunts, attached to sacred flutes, or hung within the men’s house, they offered protection, invoked ancestral guidance, and reinforced spiritual connection with the unseen world.

This finely carved example stands as a superb miniature expression of the region’s iconic ceremonial artistry.

Excellent condition. Wear consistent with age and use. Traces of dark reddish brown pigment. Heavy encrusted old patina. Size approx. 15,2cm x 5,5cm x 4,8cm.

Provenance: Dutch private collection.
