Lozi People, Early to Mid-20th Century, Lealui, Barotseland, Western Zambia

A charming small-sized shallow basket resting on three conical feet, woven from the roots of the Makenge bush (Cryptolepis oblongifolia). Its minimalist design, featuring a single black stripe around the rim, reflects the refined aesthetic and utilitarian grace of Lozi craftsmanship.

The Lozi—also known as Malozi, Barotse, or Aluyi—are a Bantu-speaking people inhabiting the Barotse Floodplain along the Zambezi River in western Zambia. Basketry has long been central to Lozi domestic and artistic life, serving both functional and ceremonial purposes. Baskets were used for winnowing grain, gathering food, and storing personal possessions, while also acting as a principal form of creative expression.

Makenge baskets are traditionally woven in natural and black tones, their motifs often composed of stripes, zigzags, or triangles. The process begins with men carefully harvesting only a portion of the long, subterranean roots of the Makenge bush, allowing the plant to regenerate—a sustainable practice passed down for generations. The roots are then peeled, boiled, dyed with natural pigments, and dried before being handwoven by women using a coiling and stitching technique that produces remarkable strength and durability.

Each basket could take weeks or even months to complete, embodying both practical utility and cultural meaning. They were especially valued as wedding gifts, symbolizing endurance and continuity, and were traditionally passed from mother to daughter across generations.

This piece, with its elegant simplicity and fine craftsmanship, stands as a testament to the Lozi people's deep respect for nature, community, and enduring artistry.

Excellent condition.  Age-related minimal wear. Almost completely faded black color. Gorgeous tanned patina. Size approx. 6,0cm x 15,0cm x 15,0cm.
